HIKING VS TREKKING What’s the distinction? Is there even a distinction to be made between hiking and trekking? Is hiking vs. trekking a centuries-old rivalry, similar to England vs. Scotland and maps vs. GPS tracking systems? Is it possible that they are the same thing? What about taps vs. faucets? And maps versus… umm… other maps?
At the risk of sounding like a high school essay, we’ll eventually come to the conclusion in this article that hiking and trekking are essentially the same things. However, each term carries a distinct set of connotations. We’ll go over those as well, so you’ll never be confused again (about the difference between hiking and trekking, that is; you’ll probably be confused about something else at some point in your life). Sorry).
HIKING VS TREKKING: MEANING
To help you understand the difference, or lack thereof, between hiking and trekking, we thought it would be helpful to start with the definitions of each, straight from the Oxford English Dictionary – the (disputed) King of Dictionaries at Much Better Adventures HQ.
The following is how the dictionary defines the differences between hiking and trekking:
- Hiking is defined as “the activity of going for long walks, particularly across the country.”
- Trekking means “to embark on a long and difficult journey, typically on foot.”
So, according to the dictionary, there isn’t much of a difference between hiking and trekking. Trekking, on the other hand, is emphasised as being slightly more difficult than hiking. Whereas hiking includes the word “walk,” which is typically seen as jovial, easy, and pleasant, trekking is defined as a “journey,” which is typically more difficult, requires more effort, and takes more than one day.
